Julia Sutliff Biography

Julia Sutliff thinks of her subject matter as "nature," and the wilder the better: trees at the border of open meadows, streams running through untended woods, fields where grasses, briers, and wildflowers are left to run riot. She has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows in Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylania, and North Carolina. While attending Brown University, she took drawing and painting classes at the Rhode Island School of Design; after moving to Baltimore, she took additional courses at the Maryland Institute College of Art. She holds a BA in Modern Culture and Media from Brown, a Master of Arts in English from the University of Maryland College Park, and a Master of Arts in Teaching from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland. She grew up in central Pennsylvania between a creek and a wood and traces her love of natural places to spending days within that majestic scenery. She now lives in northern Maryland, where the surrounding trees and hills and rivers remind her of those early, old places.
